Jan Stanislav Institute of Slavistics of Slovak Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Pontificio Istituto Orientale (Pontifical Oriental Institute) in Rome and The „Michael Lacko“ Center Of Spirituality East – West of Trnava University in Košice realizes basic research of Cyrillic and Latin manuscripts and printed monuments of Byzantine tradition. First of all there are terrain collections and archival researches. Those Cyrillic and Latin monuments of Byzantine tradition are surveyed which have arisen out of our milieu or they have originated to Slovakia through various ways from milieu, where the Byzantine tradition dominates.

Although our activities are mainly centred on the region of eastern Slovakia and mostly on proprietors of the Byzantine tradition, they are also devoted to the whole range of actual issues relating linguistic, ethnic, cultural, confessional pluralism which is typical for just researched region and serves as an example of coexistence of multiple linguistic, ethnic (Slovaks, Ruthenians, Ukrainians, Hungarians, Poles, Gypsies etc.) and religious (Greek Catholics, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants of Augsburg and Helvetic Confession etc.) groups.

Talking about Central or Carpathian area from the perspective of 17th-19th century, we realize that this area was not divided by the political boundaries that time. However, in our research we primarily observe how linguistic, ethnic and cultural consciousness precisely evolved in the level of confessionality and nation to a religious-ritual community. We research the development, malleability, mobility and identificatin of an individual and community in connection with nation to Byzantine cultural and liturgical-ritual tradition. The important part of our researches is constituting an electronic database of monuments of Byzantine tradition and their preparation for publishing.
