Place of Conference: Bratislava
Date of Conference: September 16, 2014
Responsible Person: Peter Žeňuch
Organizers: Jan Stanislav Institute of Slavistics of Slovak Academy of Sciences, Byzantine Catholic Eparchy in Bratislava

The cult of The Mother of God, Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, is a symbol of the Slovak nation representing not only the pain, suffering, profanation by its own and foreign, but first of all it is a gift of rebirth of national and Christian life of the Slovaks.

The conference aims to bring an honor to the Sorrowful Mother of God in Slovakia in the historical, literary, liturgical and broader cultural context. The glory of Mary is closely related to traditional Christian milieu whose origins stretch back to the earliest period of our national and cultural history. Reflection of this cult can be seen for example in the devoted churches in Slovakia, iconographic representations, symbols, manifestations of popular reverence, in the lyrical, song and prose writing tradition in which reverence to sorrows of The Mother of God is also reflected. Her role in the Christian history of Slovakia is an evidence of national and cultural area that unifies Western and Eastern tradition in Slovakia.
